eBay Costs and Fees

At the time of writing this article, the cost of selling an item on eBay is rather easy to calculate.  While eBay fees and selling policies are subject to change, here is the current fee structure:

10% Final Value Fee

The Final Value Fee is simply 10% of the total amount of the sale

There is also a fee imposed by PayPal for receiving payment for selling an item on eBay.  Currently the cost for business and premier accounts (the types required for selling on eBay) is $.30 per transaction and 2.9% of the money received.

Therefore the cost of selling an item is 12.9% and cost of selling an item on eBay (for all you algebra fans out there) would look like:
Cost of item *.129 +.30

Why might this be helpful?
Well for one thing it might give you an idea if its worth selling an item if you're going to be charged over 12.9% for selling an item.

You can also do what I do.  Simple make a spreadsheet in excel and input the formula.  Part of my spreadsheet looks something like this:

The fees column of the spreadsheet simply adds the previous two columns and adds up the fees:
(Item Sell Price + Shipping charge to buyer) * .129 +.3

Making a simple spreadsheet can help you to calculate eBay fees and is often easier to use than the fee calculator on eBay's website.

I could share my spreadsheet or you could find one someone created online but it might be best to simply create a simple one that fits your own needs.
